Warren Buffett: ‘Enormous progress’ has been made
(Money Blog) - Oracle of Omaha Warren Buffett said the economy is in a much better place now than at the height of the financial market meltdown last fall.
“We made enormous progress since a year ago. We had a real panic. And if you didn’t panic, you didn’t understand what was going on. What happened in September and October of 2008 will particularly be remembered for a long, long time,” Buffett said in an interview with Business Wire CEO Cathy Baron Tamraz last month that was released late Tuesday.
“And while the governmental authorities malign things sometimes, they fortunately did some very right things, very important things. They did them properly, and they kept us from going over the cliff.”
Buffett also said that consumers will keep their purse strings tight for a while to come but that the U.S. economy will work “over time.”
When asked about the economy’s prospects, Buffett said that “enormous” progress has been made since a year ago, which is a credit, in his view, to what the government did to in the Fall of 2008 to keep the economy from “going over a cliff.” And although, the economy won’t be back the way it was for a while, Buffett believes that the worst is behind us. He was more cautious when asked about unemployment rates, citing that companies must be convinced that demand is there before hiring and that may take some time.
